Criminal Justice School Chicago

criminal justice school chicago
did you get a degree in criminal justice or something else?

I have a 2 year degree in law enforcement ( i want to become a cop and I’m currently waiting on the Chicago Police Dept.) However just in case that doesn’t work out I want to go back to school and get a Bachelors degree but everyone tells me not to major in criminal justice for my B.A. because there is not mush I can do with that degree so I was wondering what other major would be a good idea? I was thinking maybe working a a probation officer?

There are really two considerations you need to take into account here: what sells and what you’re interested in.

In order to use related fields (e.g., psychology, sociology, etc.) to their full potential, you need to be willing to go on for at least your Masters and possibly PhD. That’s the selling part.

As far as what you’re interest in, go back and take some elective courses that you need to graduate with a BS and sound interesting to you.

I would suggest social work, which is a field with a high turnover rate and lots of openings. Additionally, you can work in a variety of locations (e.g., city government, hospitals, etc.) and with a variety of people (adjudicated, indigent, poor, etc.) Additionally, understand that many jobs don’t care what your degree is in, just that you DO have a degree.

If none of those fields interest you, you might check out Forensic Science. The job market is getting weak with the CSI effect, but it’s a related field and you can get goo entry level jobs in labs with just a Bachelors.

Hope that helps!
